How to Build a DIY Power Tool Storage Cabinet

1. 1 Plan a Shelf for Cutting + Sanding Tools

   

   Using a shelf included with your cabinet or a scrap piece of plywood cut to the dimensions of your cabinet interior, sketch out a space for each tool by marking lightly with a pencil. For a circular saw, mark a slot for the blade guard so the saw can sit level on the shelf. For tools that don't have flat bases and might roll around, mark locations for wood blocks to keep the tools upright.

2. 2 Complete the Tool Shelf

   

   Using your BLACK+DECKER 2.5 Amp Oscillating Multi-Tool and the plunge cutting attachment, carefully make a plunge cut to begin cutting any slots or other interior cutouts in the shelf. Cut several wood shims in 4" lengths to create bumpers to separate tools and keep them upright.
   
   Ensure these pieces are square with all edges with the carpenter's square before gluing them down to the shelf with wood glue and clamps.

3. 3 Cut PVC Pieces for Hanging Drills

   

   Cut sections of PVC pipe with your BLACK+DECKER 5 Amp Jigsaw with CurveControl™, then cut out a large "U" shape from the end of each piece to accommodate the handle and trigger of the drill.

4. 4 Install the Drill Holsters

   

   Secure the PVC holsters to the bottom of a shelf with 1/2" screws in at least two places, using your BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Cordless Lithium Drill/Driver.

5. 5 Create a Charging Station

   

   Create a shelf designated for keeping chargers neatly in a row and plugged into a power strip. Use a drill and 2" hole saw to bore a hole in the back of the cabinet to feed the power strip cord through and to an outlet.
   
   Glue a wood shim across the shelf to create a short bumper. This will keep charger mounts accessible and keep cords and the power strip from sliding forward when you want to access your batteries.

6. 6 Add Storage to the Doors

   

   Utilize the hanging space on your doors by adding hanging baskets or bins you can secure with screws. Use 1/2" screws that won't break through the front of the cabinet door, and check that your doors will still shut and not bump into the shelves. Fill these cubbies with drill bits, blades and sanding pads for quick change-ups.

7. 7 Add an Accent Color

   

   Brighten up the interior of your cabinet by adding a coat of paint to the back panel or shelves. Tape off the edges of the area you plan to paint with painter's tape for clean seams.

8. 8 Clean Off Sawdust + Store Your Tools

   

   If you're using a salvaged sink cabinet or other base cabinet without a full top panel, cut a piece of wood panel or 1/2" thick plywood to the dimensions of your cabinet and secure it to the top of the unit with 1" wood screws. Wipe off any residual sawdust with a rag.
   
   Replace all of your shelving and hook up your charging station to a power source. Store your tools in their respective cubbies and stow any attachments, blades or hardware in the hanging bins.
