How to Hang a TV

Print Page

A flat screen TV is a great addition to any home — and mounting one on the wall is a task that’s easier than you think. While planning your flat screen TV’s wall placement, take into account the size of the room, access to power, and ability to hide wires.

How to Mount a Flat Screen TV

  1. Step1AttachBracketOption2

Before you begin, check to make sure the appropriate hardware is included with your TV mount, and confirm it can accommodate the weight of your television. Lay the TV face down on a soft cloth-covered surface. Remove its base if it has one, as well as any caps covering mounting screw holes. Screw the mounting bracket to the back of the TV. Be careful not to over tighten screws.

  2. Step2LocateStuds

Studs are the beams supporting your home’s walls. Many homes have wood studs. Wood studs can hold a great deal of weight and they’re easy to work with. Other homes contain metal studs, or have solid concrete or hollow cinderblock walls. If you have wood studs, locate them with a stud finder, marking the center of each stud with a pencil.

  3. Step3MeasureOption1

Measure up from the floor and mark the bottom edge of the wall mount at each stud. Use a level to draw a guideline for the bottom of the mount.

  4. Step4InstallPlateOption3

Place the wall mount plate into position. Check again that it’s level, then mark your screw holes. Drill pilot holes for the mounting screws, then attach the mounting plate onto the wall using the fasteners included with your wall mount. If your home has wood studs, simply drive your screw into the stud. If your studs don’t line up, use drywall anchors. When purchasing drywall anchors, be sure to purchase ones rated to handle the weight of your TV and wall mount.

  5. Step9AttachTV

Get a friend to help you hang your TV by sliding the TV brackets onto the wall mount. Hook up your television’s cables. Your TV is now hung securely on the wall.
