With your BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* 5-1/2 in. Circular Saw, cut the following pieces for your hanging jewelry box:
Stand the 12" long piece of 1 x 4 up on its side. Stand the two 5" long pieces of 1 x 6 up at either end of the 1 x 4. Use a pencil and straightedge to create guidelines to help center the shelf piece 2" down from the top edge (5") of each end piece. Use the 7/64" drill bit and BLACK+DECKER 12V MAX* Cordless Lithium Drill/Driver to drill pilot holes into the center of the end pieces and into the shelf piece. Secure each end piece with a 1½" wood screw.
The false bottom shelf creates a shallow tray for storing jewelry. It also leaves room below for installing hardware for hanging the jewelry box.
TIPS: Drill pilot holes using a bit that has a smaller diameter than the screw’s shank, the solid portion of the threaded area. Pilot holes remove some material to help prevent the screws from splitting the wood, especially near ends and edges.
Align the front and back pieces of pine by sliding them between the two end pieces. Ensure the edges are flush. Secure the end pieces to the front and back in each corner by drilling pilot holes and driving in 1½" wood screws.
Measure and mark the locations of the drawer pulls or hooks, 1" above the bottom of the box and spaced evenly. Be sure to account for the size of your pulls or hooks when determining your spacing. Drill holes through the front of the box with a 11/64" drill bit to install the hardware after you paint the box.
Prep your jewelry box for painting by sanding the wood surfaces thoroughly with a medium 100 grit sandpaper and BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium Ion MOUSE® Sander. Fill the screw holes (not the drawer pull holes) with wood putty before a final sanding with a finer 120 grit to smooth out any scratches on the wood surface.
Wipe the box with a damp rag to remove all sanding dust. Paint the box with a few coats of high-gloss enamel paint, allowing the final coat to cure overnight.
Install your drawer pulls or hooks in the pre-drilled holes by tightening the bolts on the backside of the box's front piece.
TIP: Choose drawer pulls or hooks that complement your existing décor.
After choosing a location for your hanging jewelry box, mount it securely to the wall by driving two 2" wood screws through the back of the shelf into pre-installed drywall anchors.
TIP: Place the box by your home’s entrance to hold your keys, sunglasses and wallet, or hang it in your bedroom with an accent mirror to use it as a mini vanity.
